Lecture 11 · Ordinary Differential Equations

Time stepping, accuracy, stability, and conservation

San Diego State University

Open the ODE slides · Read the worked handout.

The lecture introduces ODEs, state variables, and physical modeling, then derives exact growth and decay solutions. Finite differences and Taylor expansions lead to Euler, midpoint RK2, and RK4. Worked examples compare accuracy, stability, energy, and phase. Richardson extrapolation and symplectic leapfrog complete the method comparison. A radial pressure-balance example connects these methods to planetary interiors.

The deck contains 40 main slides and four optional references after the exit questions. The handout provides the worked explanations for review.

These methods support the ODE library and exoplanet-interior work in Project 4. Its brief defines the required work and dates.
